So, this is not specifically about me, but rather in regards to my partner.

She's been working in what really amounts to a client success leader for a pharmaceutical for the last five years (moved up from various positions through the years, and this is her first true professional job outside of working for retail and the like). Throughout her employment, she's had various experiences in working in various technologies such as Salesforce, CRMs, and the like, but she lacks critical technology or IT experience with anything specifically where she had to build products, services, sell/support anything that's related to technology.

Recently, she had a huge company shuffle and as a result, her position is more or less a sales position, something that she admits is not her alley and is trying to find an out as soon as possible. She feels (and I agree) that she's being set up for failure, and she wants out before she's let go. Furthermore, the company she works at is a sinking ship. Long story short, she needs a new job, and a new one very quickly. A parallel switch within her company is not an option, she wants out.

She's been firing out resumes left and right for several months for positions that she feels are down her alleyway, but other than a few interviews, nothing serious have come her way. We both believe this is because of one of two reasons:

• She currently lacks critical experience selling, supporting, or offering any sort of client-side customer service with technology-related products or services.

• The salary she made is nowhere close to the positions she is applying to, or is anywhere close to what she is looking for.

As a result, she's been feeling dejected about the whole process. We talked through the possibility of having a job coach look over her resume (which I helped write, but I don't mind a second set of eyes) and Linkedin profile with a fine-toothed comb to see what is going on (she seems to be attracting more sales-related positions rather than client/customer success positions) to see why she's not attracting recruiters. But this seems to cost quite a bit of money which she is very lukewarm to spend (and understandably so). I was able to convince her to take a step back and take a break from the process for a month while we figure out her next steps, and then attack it all over again next year.

I guess my reason for posting here is to see what we can do to help my partner, who has no practical technology experience, better set herself up to find positions in the technology sector. What certifications could she realistically go after which might attract a recruiter?

Title describes my situation. I finished my master’s in 2020, started a job in finance with the DoD roughly 5 months ago, and may be receiving an offer with a contractor for a 40% raise. I have student loans and have been planning on doing the 10 year service forgiveness program, but now it’s looking like I can make more in the private sector over 10 years than the amount that would be forgiven.

Things to consider — giving up potential pension (which isn’t as good as when the boomers had it), job security/stability, student loan forgiveness.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Any advice for making the jump to private sector?

So basically, I made a few short films with weird titles that contain the words "stupid fighting", "69" and stuff like that.

They show up on IMDb because I foolishly submitted data about me and the other people that I worked with on the short films to IMDb thinking it will make my films "official" or something.

Now my IMDb page shows up as the first result when you google my name.

I have tried and tried to get my page off IMDb but they keep saying they won't remove accurate information.

How will this affect me on my job applications? I really don't know how to resolve this.

Hey I would appreciate some opinions on my current situation if anyone is interested in discussing it. Im basically looking to make a change and move up to the next step in my career but I’m not sure what my options are? I was hoping someone might have some ideas I haven’t considered.

A basic rundown of my background: -Early 30s male. -A.A.S. Degree in HVAC -Current title is design and test engineer for a military contractor -previous title is mechanical project manager for a commercial and industrial mechanical company. This included designing mechanical systems even though I’m not actually a mechanical engineer. -Title before that is engineering technician

Those are the only 3 jobs I’ve had since 2007. I’m not really interested in going back to working for mechanical companies but I’ve been considering options like coding boot camps. I’m not sure if this would be worth it to help me transition to the tech sector.

So I've gotten 2 job offers and I am a little tiffed. I don't know how to proceed.

One listing said pay was $16-18. Aced the interview and they offered me the job on the spot. I figured I'd negotiate pay when I came in to do paperwork the next day. However the woman who was handling my paperwork told me its $16. When I told her I hoped with my experience and education I could get closer to $18, she seemed annoyed and said I'd have to talk to the guy who interviewed me and he's on holiday vacation. Said she'll have him call me.

The other listing also said pay was $16-18. Got an email saying theyre offering me the job for $15. Pay was not discussed in the interview, and the email is phrased very matter of fact, it doesn't read like pay is negotiable.

Should I pursue counter offers? Or just take the higher paying position for now and keep looking for other jobs? These are both fairly low level jobs, yet they advertised higher pay so I don't feel my frustration is unjustified.

A part of me thinks they put deceptively high pay ranges to attract applicants, but have no intention of actually paying that high, since they didn't attempt to negotiate. I feel a bit baited and switched.

I have a stem degree and plenty of applicable experience. I was making $30/hr at my last job which was a managerial role; I didn't expect to get that much since these aren't managerial, but I do feel I deserve $18.

In my previous role, they brought up pay during the interview, and I expected the same would occur for these jobs. Everything online says the interviewee shouldn't bring up pay until after the interviewer does, so I didn't feel appropriate bringing it up myself in these interviews. In the future, if they don't bring up pay in the interview, should I? How can I advocate for myself and my value, without coming across like I'm "only in it for the money"?

Having a learning disability hasn't been helping enough... but a stat that people say can change on a whim.... it's not something I have to prove, but claim. Does it help to put yourself in that category?

I recently started a job the last week of November. In the interview I was told I would be a full time hire and there hasn’t been a single week over 32-38 hours yet. Obviously with holidays it’s understandable to be less but I’m just not being scheduled when I could be. I’ve come in on days other people have called in just to get more hours.

Is it idiocracy to apply to other jobs? They told me they’re like family and that they will support me going back to school etc. I feel awful but even the manager I love that has been training me is leaving in January.

For context, this is my first job since earning my BA in 2019 and it doesn’t have anything to do with my degree. On top of it, I only make $15 an hour when the average studio apartment near me is $1300 a month. (To put into perspective) It’s kind of livable but without the actual full time hours I’m having a hard time wanting to stay. They’ve taught me a lot and I’m so thankful but this is supposed to be their busiest time of year and I’m not even getting my hours.

I’ve been unemployed since the pandemic began in 2020 (in the convention industry and it’s not fully recovered but in a better place so I’m just starting my search) and last month I updated my LinkedIn profile to include the #opentowork hashtag. I was surprised recruiters and peers both reached out - I was particularly excited to hear from an industry peer about an opportunity with her company altho it would be far below my former salary - I didn’t care because it’s the work I love to do and I just want back in the game. Her company has slow walked the interview process (my first interview was mid-Nov) and just sent a congratulatory email to inform me I’ve made it to the final round of interviews which will be conducted after the new year and ironically with the peer who reached out about the opportunity originally. What they don’t know is another company approached me the first week of December and within two weeks I had an offer 55k above the salary range for their open position. I don’t want to burn bridges as my industry is fairly small (convention organizers) but I’d like to provide them with a reason I’m going to decline the 3rd interview. Do I give my peer who reached out initially with the opportunity a heads up-or do I just respond to the hiring manager and say I’m declining the final interview? And what do I say? I'm an 18 year old HS graduate, and I've been with customer service related jobs for about 2 years now. Most of the searching I've done requires someone with an associates degree (I don't have the money for school and I don't have the money to get a car either, and I don't have a bike either lol). So, I'm kinda at a loss. I would love for some suggestions that don't really involve being on the phone 24/7, and is something more of making sure truckers are on their correct route, something of that sort.

The reason I want an online job is because I can't afford to Uber everyday to my current job, which is only seasonal and I'm out of work on the 1st of January. And I don't have a car, so I'd need a remote job until I can afford a car because do I love to be working on my feet.

Hi! In May, I (f24) graduated with a Master’s Degree and took a job at a university. My job only requires a bachelors and the rate reflects that; it’s not a bad job and the pay isn’t terrible but it’s not sustainable long term because my partner and I would like to start a family.

Recently a position that I am well-qualified for that requires a Master’s came open. It’s a different department but it’s a job in which I would work closely with my current department. I’ve only been at this job about 8 months, so is it too soon to apply for this higher position? Am I too young to think I can get away without “paying my dues?”

The other day I had a flat tire on my work vehicle (I drive around to bars and repair/service jukeboxes, video games, etc), I discovered there was no spare tire in the car.

Called my manager, told him the situation, he was immediately very upset with me because I "did not fill out the vehicle inspection form properly". (I filled out this form about 4 months ago, usually every 6 months) I let it slide off my back cause I don't like conflict.

I found a Firestone that was open on xmas-eve and pumped the tire up for the trip. They inspected it and said they could not patch it because the tread was so low, I would have to buy a new tire. Which I did with my own credit card and filled out the required expense report to get reimbursed.

So, today he called me while I was at a location to tell me that the boss (owner of the co) was very angry with me for this, and wants me to no longer be able to drive the work vehicle home at night since apparently I can't take proper care of it. From now on I am supposed to drive my own car to work, then take the company car to do my runs for the day.

I got to thinking about this frustrating situation, and honestly do not recall missing anything on that form, so I double checked; NOWHERE on that form is 'spare tire' even mentioned. I wonder how many of the other techs have no spare tire?

So, I wrote a polite email to my manager letting him know I did not screw up the form and that spare tire is never even mentioned. That was 2 hours ago and have not heard back from him yet.

I realize I probably should have thought to check the spare, but it never occurred to me.

I am sullenly hoping to get an apology tomorrow, but it probably wont happen. It kinda sux because for the most part, I really like this job. I get to be alone out on the road, driving around and fixing stuff, and, for the most part, I don't have to deal with coworkers very much.

I am very stressed out and took a xanax to calm my nerves. I have already updated my resume and will start to look for a new job tomorrow if I don't get an apology.

My current role has a 6month probation period. Not long now and I’d have my probation review.

In the initial application stage I made the mistake of not negotiating salary. I feel I’m being paid less in my industry and deserve more - as well as based on sites, such as glassdoor. How can I ask for a higher salary, how do I go about it?

I'm scheduled to start a new job around Jan 10. I saw a ton of negative glass-door reviews so I decided to reach out to 5 or 6 previous employees. All previous employees mentioned they would not recommend this company to anyone and non of them would go into detail why the company was bad. It was just a lot of vague responses like trust your instinct and they made it a point to say I left the company for a reason etc.

How soon do you think it would be before you could tell a job is toxic. It's a 100% remote position in project management (the entire company is remote) but it seems like a ton of previous wework employees are here

I have worked a few jobs. At my first job I got along ok with my boss and worked there a few years. She was a bit crazy and would sometimes call and leave me a voice mail to come in while yelling at me on my day off. A new lady came and she was the mom of a girl who worked at the same place. My boss immediately disliked her for no reason and everything she did was wrong for her even though she was new and didn't make any major errors and was only starting to get clients. There was a woman who would take clients from new coworkers and she never had a talking to. Well the lady ended up getting fired after less than 2 months. I really liked her and thought she was nice.

Second job I had out of college was with a boss who would talk about me behind my back. I was new to my job and within the 90 days and doing my job to the best of my ability. I am a type A and a perfectionist. After seeing coworkers I was interacting with on the daily come in injured and sick because the job offered no sick days I quit before the 3 months because I was getting tense about all the diseases I was in contact with. I caught my first ever pink eye my first month there. The boss called and left me a scathing voice-mail where she was screaming how she thought it was little and low professional of me to quit at a moments notice and basically said f you and hung up.

3rd job got another boss who would prefer the women who were flirty and then one day without notice or warning led me to a room where he had the hr woman who wanted to force me to resign for issues he had never brought up to me before and hr promised I would be eligible to come back in the future and oh well I still had a second job to fall back on. Turns out she lied and I couldn't be hired back.

4th job worked in HR. A woman kept coming to complain that a supervisor was having sex with a younger woman on his team in his office. She said that she told the head hr and the hr supervisor who did nothing. They could care less. I was hired to help or replace a pregnant woman who seemed very nice but then she and the rbf boss would pick at everything and constantly overwork me and another girl. The other girl ended up quitting before I left too. Since she quit I was given double the work. While being given double the work the pregnant hr supervisor who had seemed nice when I met her was writing out what i was doing wrong and having talks with me because she wanted me fired. They favorited the weekend girl who was praised for being a teacher on the side and only worked one day there. I finally quit and they stopped harassing me everyday at work.

Current job. The boss disliked me for no reason since day 1 when I was put on her team. She had a talk when I took one break under 20 minutes then another because she said I wasn't doing enough work. She would not have talks with men she favorites who were on her team a few months longer than I was. I am a woman. Even when these men kept breaking the rules such as not working and sleeping during work or taking 40 minute breaks on the daily instead of our required 15. I brought this up and she wouldn't look me in the eye after. She now ignores and pretends to not pay attention when I need help. Since then I guess karma caught up and they will be closing the contract for this current job and possibly letting everyone go in a few months.

How to avoid horrible bosses like the above? I want to work but I don't want another bad boss.

Should I contact the recruiter on LinkedIn, considering I sent the application a couple of days ago? I just want to stand out from the rest. Should I request for an interview or ask about the role in a round-about way? I'm wondering if asking for an interview would be too pushy.

I need some help making a decision on how to proceed forward. Currently, I work for a large, well-known computer company in a marketing role, but my team is primarily development and QA. I’ve been there for about 2 years and it has a reputation for being male-dominated, which has been a big education for me, it’s transformed me as a professional and made me more cunning and strategic when dealing with work because of how cutthroat it is there. However, I’m not happy with my team and my role primarily because I feel siloed and I don’t have a team of marketers for support but I do have people from other teams I can connect with for additional support. People on my team treat my role as useless or as a way to micromanage/own what I do and it’s tiring having to deal with that because they do not have expertise in that area. I make good money and have great benefits so I’m comfortable financially.

I’ve been applying for external jobs for months now, and I was offered another marketing position at a smaller company, one of my company’s clients as a reseller of their products. I will be working on a team of other marketers doing the same job and have my own portfolio of work. The job pays $14k more and is a brand new team.

I’m having hesitations because while the new job I accepted seems as an upgrade in pay and having a team, I’m having cold feet because I didn’t try to apply for internal roles at my current company at all. It’s also hard to get into and is a lead in company for a FAANG, which is ultimately where I want to be at some point in my career. Once people know I work for this company, they take me seriously and it’s a preferred employer in my city. My mental health was challenged at this company but I haven’t had the experience of being on medication or part of a mass layoff (yet), but from what I’ve learned that’s common in such a large company and just in corporate culture in general.

The reason why I wanted to leave this role was because I felt my management wasn’t very supportive of me yet took ownership of my work and because I was siloed. I wanted to own my projects, but I can also see due to the competitive nature of the company, those types are anywhere too and something I could very well encounter later on in my career. So I’m trying to assess if my issues are just gripes of corporate culture or within reason to leave.

I talked to a family member about it and she mentioned I wouldn’t lose anything if I stayed with my current job financial wise and that I shouldn’t have fear of another external opportunity coming my way either because I’m talented and smart.

I signed my offer letter at the new company but I haven’t given my current employer my notice just yet since I’m on break, so I have some time to think about it.

Any advice?

I just received a job offer with a 20% pay raise and a better opportunity to advance my career. At first, I was open about moving to another state until I started crunching out the numbers to find out after adjusting to the new cost of living, the raise is about 5% if I want to main my current level of comfort, and the cost of moving among breaking my current lease (2 months rent), signing a new lease, and moving my belongings /furniture will cost ~$5,000, which I can afford, but it will big portion of my emergency savings, which is something I don't really want to do considering I am moving to an uncertain situation.

I am interested in the new opportunity, and I think it can open a lot of career advancement for me, but also I am hesitant since financially the move is a pretty burden. I am currently employed in a good job that I have had for 5 years that I like, and it has a great work culture and stability, but I am not going anywhere hence why I started looking for a new job 2 months ago. This is pretty much the second job offer I have ever gotten since graduating college, and that is why I was rusty with negotiating salary and/or relocation help so I ended up in this corner until Monday to make a decision.

My main worry is that I have no work experience, and I can't think of any extracurriculars I could possibly add to beef up the resume, so I mainly filled it with relevant skills I learned from classes. I didn't participate in any clubs or sports in school. The only thing I can possibly think of is I used to read and write a lot recreationally, but I haven't done so in a long time, so I worry it would be disingenuous to add it to my resume. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I research and write thoughtfully about what I'm looking for, then try to find some stuff according to that, then single out products accordingly using various advanced search combinations and filters (like show only products with such features) on better built sites. Then I compare the top contenders.. It's a lot of work.. several hours most often. Most of these fucking review sites are paid bullshit btw, to feature some products and write random true things about them..

I really feel like everytime I do this I save a lot of money and/or vastly improve the result of whatever the search is for. So it's a long term benefit.

I avoid timewasters such as Aliexpress and amazon, which I call garbage sites to rummage through for hours. Giant fucking ad spaces, rather than search filter tools.

I have a constantly expanding list of research done. I could give some examples for real. I wish someone would pay me for doing a service to humanity lol..

For a bit of context, I am a 28M living in Sydney Australia. My educational background is in theoretical physics (phD), but I have a bit of experience in software development as a junior in my current job (only a few months though), mainly using Python.

I was thinking of switching to a fully remote job as I hate having to travel to the city all the time, but I can't seem to find any jobs I would be suited for. I don't mind programming or data science, but I am not truly passionate about them. Mainly looking for something 100% remote and which pays well (over 6 figures since I already get paid relatively high in my current job). Another thing is that since I lack industry experience I think I will need to stay in my current job for at least 2 years before being qualified to switch to something else.

Any suggestions?
