Follow up calls

So are follow up calls still something we’re supposed to do? Or I guess more accurately are they something that isn’t going to just make said potential employers dump your resume?

I remember in college they talked about how your supposed to call after you apply/are interviewed to show that you are really interested, but now-a-days it feels as though recruiters want AS little human contact as possible.
