I have a job interview for a receptionist/ kennel assistant at an animal shelter on Friday. I wanted a job like dog walking/sitting, but this was the only position available that was not 100% human.
I truly believe I will get the job due to my immense animal experience, sincerity, and the amazing coincidence of timing, urgency, and job requirements. I will be anxious, but I noticed that in my few essential human interactions, I tend to rely on that adrenaline to just going for it and say what I need to say. I'm practicing on not seeming as stiff when I do though.
If I have a script or guideline to help me through the first few clients, I can definitely get a hang of assisting clients. The animal part is easy for me. The only issue is I need to be able to make small talk with staff and clients. I can I am worried about my inability to look at people's faces and my awkward or inappropriate responses/ pauses. Building good, strong relations with clients is important to my job and employer.
I've lost most conversational skills since I rarely speak to others. For 8 years, I only talked to my family and the occasional academic figure. The past 2 years, I never left my dorm room and only talked to my sister once a week. Online classes are the only reason I didn't drop out of college and cut contact completely. I'm looking for a therapist right now; but in the mean time, I thought an animal related job would do wonders for paying for tuition, building life experience, and getting me back into the world before I completely lose touch of the world.
