Bombed my first IT job interview... what now?

Hi everyone,

I had a 3 person panel helpdesk interview yesterday. I COMPLETELY BOMBED IT. This was my first and only IT interview ever after applying for months with zero interviews.

My background is follows: B.S. degree with a major in political science and two minors in business fields. Certificate from community college in networking and AAS in computer programming along with several certifications. No prior IT work experience but trying to break in.

The first part was just tell me about yourself, what kind of work do you do now, etc. Then they were like "Ok so we have some tech questions". Basically, they asked me only three tech questions.

One question was "Say you have a user calling you and he has no network connectivity. What do you do?" I was like "Well there could be many issues. I need a more info than that. Is this a remote user connecting through a VPN to the corporate network? Is he an internal user that lost internet access? Is this on WiFi?"

Then the guy was extremely frustrated just by me asking that and he was like "See those computers over there? He is sitting on one of those computers right here." and I was like "Ok, so first thing I would do is the obvious stuff. Can he get to any internet site? I'll see if he can connect to the corporate intranet and also something like the CNN website. I don't know if I would ping or trace route anything at this point. If he can't connect I would run IPCONFIG from the terminal and look and see if everything looks good. If he has an IP address that starts with 169, that would indicate an APIPA address to me and maybe it was DHCP server problem."

So the dude is just staring at me at this point. So then I am like "You said he is sitting on those computers over there. Does no one have internet connectivity? If so, that could indicate that there might be a problem further up the line with a switch or a router."

Then the guy was like "Ok, well, anyone else have a question?"

So then the next guy was like "Let's say someone calls and says their computer is slow. What do you do step by step to fix it?"

and I was like "Ok, well, again, I need more information than just that. I mean, with just the info you are giving me, it could be all kinds of things. What does slow mean? Was it slow out of the box new? It could just be that they are using a really low spec system with 4 gigs RAM and an old Intel Core 2 Duo. I mean, you can't do much else if the hardware is the issue."

So this dude is just death staring me too and is then like "It's the software that's slow".

So then I am like "Ok, so first thing I am doing is going into task manager. I am going to look at CPU and memory usage. Maybe there is a program with a memory leak that is using 10 gigs of RAM. Or maybe there is a tab open in the browser running some script that is using 95% of CPU resources."

He was just like "OK". Then the third and final guy was like "Ok, so let me ask you. How did you learn about IT?" and I was like "Well, I have several certifications that are A+, Network+, Security+, Server+ and Microsoft MCDST/MCP/MTA. I completed a certificate in community college in computer networking and an associate of applied science degree in computer programming." Then he interrupted me and was like "You have certifications and a degree?" and I was like "Yes its on my application."

Then he was like "Is there anything else you want to say before you go?" and I was just like "I know I don't have any formal IT experience, but I definitely want to learn and I am passionate about tech." and he was like "How can I tell you are passionate?" and I was like "Well, for example, I spent over a year developing a major program on my own that has over 1000 downloads." and he was like "What are you talking about?" and I was like "I have a website for it if you are interested." and he immediately interrupted me and was like "Ok. Well, we will follow up with you by the end of the day. Do you know the way out?" and I was like "Yes" and left.

An hour later, I had an email saying I wasn't selected.

Soooo.... where do I go from here? I mean, do I need to do interview practice? Is there some kind of prep I can do to do better? I thought I wouldn't have a problem with a helpdesk interview but apparently not.... I appreciate any advice.
