Asking highest wage?

I got contacted by a recruiter for a large corporate daycare.

They asked my wage and I gave a wage higher than my expected hoping she’d counter and she basically said that was too high for a teacher position and more inline with an assistant director position then said sorry.

Would it be ok to ask the highest they could go as far as salary?
