I don't know if this is more job advice or life advice but it does have to do entirely with my job so I figure why not post here.
I started a new job a few months ago, short commute, good pay and benefits, in my field of study. Really no complaints whatsoever there. On paper it's a great job and I'm mad at myself for wanting to leave.
Anyway, the problem is that 9/10 (literally) of my coworkers are from the Philippines. I don't mean ethnically Filipino but really American, I mean they were born in the Philippines and came here recently. They all speak English to varying degrees of fluency, a few of them barely speak any English at all, which in and of itself makes it difficult to get work done sometimes.
The Filipino population where I live is not big, maybe 1-2%. The hiring manager is Filipino so I'm going out on a limb and saying this isn't just a crazy cooky random coincidence. Also the line of work has absolutely no need to speak Tagalog or anything like that, from my POV it's just pure nepotism from the manager. I'd imagine he would be going out of his way to hire only Filipino people based on the applicant pool probably being 1-2% Filipino.
The reason I hate this so much because they're constantly speaking Tagalog with each other, and I don't mean on break with each other, I mean during work, during meetings. There have been meetings with me (and the one other non-Filipino employee) where they spend 90% of the meeting speaking Tagalog and decide to fill us in on the other 10% in English. I guess they think we only need to know 10%. They'll also tell each other jokes in Tagalog and burst into laughter when they know I'm within earshot of them. I've heard my name a few times in their "jokes" as well, however I want to believe that I'm just being paranoid and they're not telling jokes about me.
Am I crazy for feeling alienated and disrespected in this atmosphere? Or am I just an asshole?
