How should a 3 year gap in employment, caused by mental illness with some freelancing in an unrelated field, be explained during job applications?

My boyfriend (28M) works in finance and business but has been on a journey involving a generalized anxiety disorder for the past 5 years. This caused him to quit his finance position at a major bank 3 years ago to deal with the illness and all its manifestations.

During this time, he did some music production freelancing and was able to support himself during this. He did this for the past three years and was able to manage some of the anxiety, though it's definitely still there. A few months ago, through some connections, he got a temporary contract job at a financial institution. Now, he needs to find a new job due to the contract coming to an end.

My question is, how should he address this gap?

Currently, in his resume, it's listed as "music freelance" for 3 years. He's a little hesitant about this, and so am I, as this seems like a hugely unrelated field, and perhaps comes off feeling unprofessional. Should he instead list something like "Medical leave, freelance music work", instead, or does this create even larger a red flag?

I'd appreciate any advice and I would share this with him! The issue brings him down so much and I just wanted to be able to do anything I could to help!
