I am in the fortunate position of being offered two jobs but am really struggling to choose between the two. Same title for both roles (Geotechnical Engineer)
Job A
Consulting engineering firm
60% Field work 40% office
Smaller scale projects
Possibility of having to work away from home for short stints (up to 2 weeks at a time)
1 hour commute each way
8 hour working day (they mentioned having to do overtime when required)
I will be learning some new things, hoping to get some experience in the software programs they use.
Pay is probably at or slightly above market value with the potential of a bonus (no idea what the potential is..)
Job B
Large construction company
Working on a large project (so no travel) with a 2 year lifetime
I am already experienced in the role, but during the interview they mentioned the possibility of being able to expand the role responsibilities and learn new skills
Short commute, 15 minute walk from home
Hours will be big. Will eventually be on a 7 days on 3 days off 7 nights on 4 nights off roster all 12 hour days ( I have already worked on a roster like this, which was demanding)
Pay is 50k higher than Job A
Potential to move into other roles within the company (design/planning and no more roster etc) once the project is complete
Job A has the attraction of adding stronger technical skills with a relatively normal working environment. I am considering trying to negotiate for slightly more $$$. The consulting environment does not hugely appeal to me having spent all my career in site based roles. I would be viewing it as trying to get as much experience as I can in 2 years and then reassess.
Job B has the attraction of being much higher paid, I am familiar with the working environment/role and being close to home. Although it comes with having to work much longer hours plus working on roster.
I have plans to start a family and buy a house in the near future and the financial benefit of Job B makes that seem more attainable. Where as Job A I feel like we could achieve those things but may be in a tighter spot financially.
It feels like those goals have become a bigger part of my thinking process which makes the financial rewards more attractive.
