I just started a job Friday. I recently graduated as a Medical Assistant but have not tested yet. I am working two full time jobs to support a child.
The employer knows I am not certified and hired me anyway. I was fine with any receptionist position. Friday, I worked and trained for 5 hours with a young woman. She kept asking if I liked the job and seemed stressed. She told me the last 3 people walked out on her in the middle of the day and a nurse just quit and I can see why. 3 people alone run the busy office.
There are no breaks. We are not allowed to take a lunch. We have to sneak food for 8 hours when the doctor isn't looking and he will yell if he comes around the corner and we are eating. I have epilepsy and this is a huge no for my blood sugar.
Another strange thing that happened is after my 5 hours on Friday, I was approached by the doctor who barely speaks English. He said because I am a Medical Assistant I should be able to give shots and do everything a nurse does. I told him I have not even tested for the MA exam and no. I know this is illegal and declined. He then offered me more money to do this anyway (maybe unaware of the laws in the states?).
The staff changed their attitude towards me today. The girl who trained me Friday did NOT show today and left me entirely alone at the front desk to do referrals, coding (I don't know their damn software and why would I) and every time I had difficulties, the staff would scoff and make rude comments.
The only nurse in the place actually yelled "this is why we hire people who know what they are doing, she doesn't know shit!". Meanwhile, their fax machine went down and phone system was a mess. The office is a mess.
Most of you are going to say run, but I am in a bad state here where I just lost all my money to a lawyer. I am wondering if anyone else has worked in an environment like this and if it gets better. The job market where I am in PA is absolutely awful in this small town. Thanks.
