I've been at my job for a little over 6 months and have been really enjoying it. I like the people, management is chill and the work is interesting and keeps me busy. I have no intention of looking elsewhere right now because it fits my current lifestyle. But today I received an email from my boss alerting me that someone complained about me and another colleague talking to each other too much throughout the day and that it might be causing a disturbance to others who are working. It sounds fair, but the issue is that I never had any indication that was a problem considering were a small department and literally every single person does this. My colleague and I have been catching up in the morning when we both come in and our desks are nearby. I'd say 5 mins tops. Ive seen other women do this (including management) since the day I started there which is why I never thought it was a problem. My colleague is newer than me and received the email too so she's a bit freaked out because she didn't know it's be an issue other since everyone is so chatty? Like the first week anyone new starts everyone talks to them and the whole dept has women who are friends with each other who go to each other's desks to chat. Not to mention it's only like 3-5 mins in the morning and after lunch, and the rest of time is spent listening to podcasts for hours while working.
Anyway i have a gut feeling about who mightve complained because there's a woman who sits in our vicinity who I've never really gotten good vibes from. I'm polite to her but I've heard her complain about other employees and she's admitted to complaining to management before about other people. That's her pergotative I guess but I'm more like, life is hard enough as is and I'd rather not ruin someone's day over something so trivial. It's important to note that we are all contract employees, so there's an undertone of competition because everyone essentially wants to get a permanent position with the company when a position opens up... More recently I've been getting trained in a lot of new stuff that was previously done by a longtime permanent employee and I have a feeling that this woman who I think complained might feel threatened because she thought she would next in line for it, since she's made a few snarky comments to me about my new duties.
I plan on keeping my head down and being more quiet, and honestly that's how its always been until I made a work friend but Im gonna continue to spend most of my time listening to podcasts and doing my work. I emailed my manager back apologizing for the long breaks (this is something I've done on occasion by accident and definitely need to be more mindful of) and letting them know I'll be more mindful of my conversations on the floor etc but is there anything else I should do to cover myself and not stir any drama at work? I am extremely bad at whatever etiquette there is when it comes to dealing with office politics and tend to be quite sensitive so I'd appreciate any advice.
