I'm reasonably content with my current job---decent pay, a few key perks. One of which is WFH on my own schedule with very little micromanaging. I'm a department of one and my boss trusts me (and I deliver!) so right now I'm on a 2 days in, 3 days WFH schedule.
My current office is located downtown, and that has a couple upsides---there's an option to get there with just one bus (I don't drive) since it's centrally located. It's in a mixed residential and shopping part of town that has plenty of takeout locations and after-work stuff and my dry cleaners and nail gal, stuff like that. The offices themselves are on the 18th floor with 360 views of beautiful natural features. The office are new and have lovely amenities.
So...
I'm up for a promotion at my current job and have been hedging my bets by keeping my options open because I'll be pretty badly stung and angry if it doesn't push through (to the point I will amp up my job search and leave at the first reasonable offer, pretty much).
I took a prelim phone call from a recruiter that reached out to me and the job sounds really promising.
It's more money, a better title, my own office with a door, travel (which I like) and seems like an overall step in the right direction. But...it's a few blocks from my old neighborhood (which I left in a major part because a neighbor was stalking and harassing me). That part of town has a few restaurants and shops but it's a grimy, mostly industrial and not in a cute way area marred by the expressway which cuts right through it. Unless I figure out some magic, it's likely at least 2 busses or 1 bus + 1 train from home. I've seen the office building, it's a landmark in that part of town and it's a charmless high rise box with nothing in walking distance other than a Denny's and a KFC. Plus, I run a very real risk of running into my legitimately mentally ill neighbor.
And I asked about WFH and they gave me some fancy footwork "life happens, we get it, if you need to stay home for a delivery, that's cool". So in other words, no WFH. I'd have to be in that part of town every day, pretty much.
So...I guess I have to throw it out there. How much does the office location factor into your decision making?
