Been working at the same job since graduating and need to tell my boss I'm leaving for another one. Advice or some war stories will make this easier if anyone has any.

Long story short, I have been working at the same job for about 10yrs now since graduating college. I was hired on as the third employee. Since then we have grown to about twenty plus people and I am now firmly in the number two spot. I already know that if my boss decided to leave he would pass the company off to me. The job is a job, good times and bad times. The pay is great, the people are good, the job is stressful like most out there, and my boss is a very stereotypical boss. Overall I made a decision to start looking for a new job a few months ago and something actually stuck. A really good something. I just got the official offer and now need to make the final move, telling my boss. This has kept me up at night because he has been my mentor for so long and I can honestly say that I am a ten times better person because of him. At this point, I feel like the biggest douchebag for leaving and need someone or anyone to tell me that my skin is not going to melt off once I do tell him. There are no hard feelings against him or the company. I just need something different in my life and to get away.
