English writing skills are often overlooked when it comes to entry-level professional service positions.
For reference, I graduated with a bachelor's in accounting, and I have read writing samples from many applicants. In my city, there is a large population of green card holders from China. Even the ones who have completed high school in the city have subpar writing skills relative to native English speakers. I have seen sentence fragments, improper punctuation, misused prepositions, and just generally poor sentence structure.
In the professional service field, communication skills are pivotal to the success of any employee, especially in management. The ability to communicate complex concepts to clients with minimal grammatical errors and good sentence structure will only improve the firm's, and ultimately, the employee's image. While a strong case can be made for people with exceptional Excel skills for more experienced positions in accounting firms, firms typically offer a plethora of training modules for entry-level employees, most of which have to do with software training.
Excel is much easier to learn than how to be a good writer. I have spent decades sharpening my English skills, and even I still make basic grammatical errors. At the end of the day, English is a difficult language, and the ability to write coherently is a skill that takes decades to master.
At my prior position, I worked as an analyst where I took on ad hoc projects that were crucial to the operations of my unit. The bulk of my workload involved communicating concepts to representatives, who were oftentimes high-level personnel at their respective organizations. Since the position was remote, we mostly communicated by email. I could sense from the tone of their writing that these representatives have little patience for inadequate or uninformative writing, so I had to make certain that my explanations were clear from the get-go. If they weren't, then I risked harming my own or my organization's reputation.
That is why I believe people, especially those who were born and raised in an English speaking country, should capitalize on their writing skills to make them more competitive in the job market. There is no need to have animosity towards immigrants taking coveted positions in reputable companies. Communication skills are typically highly sought after, so it is to one's benefit that they market them to the best of their ability.
