A little about me - I’m 25 years old, currently a sophomore at a community college (I started school late) and I major in graphic design. I accepted a 40 hour full time internship back in September with the intention of thinking I was going to be able to learn and contribute in a professional environment while I’m finishing up school at this huge and well known company. So yes I’m full time and go to school full time at night.
I was told in my interview back then, that interns at this company are known as junior designers, and I really respected that idea coming from my employer about interns. It showed he really cares about his interns and their growth here.
But honestly, after have interning for a month and a half now, I am extremely stressed mentally. A designer on my team who is in charge of delegating projects to interns - gives me no work, even though I ask all the time and let it be known that I’m willing to help. I honestly feel like they rather just share the work amongst themselves, and don’t want to give me anything to work on. Instead, I take initiative and work on things that are due from a month now since I honestly don’t know what else to do. I have no one to talk to, since my co workers are very clique and give me dirty looks for no reason when I try to make small talk with them. They are the type of co workers that constantly talk shit about other people behind their back in the office. So the atmosphere is very negative and unwelcoming. I honestly think no one likes me here because I’m bad at conversing with people since I do get anxiety, and don’t share a lot of the interests with people here.
I’m not learning absolutely anything which is why I accepted this position into thinking I’ll feel like a junior designer taking on tasks that will challenge me and help me in the future of my career as a designer. Instead, I work on one project for the entire week that I honestly could do in one hour and when I ask if I can help on the countless projects that are there to do, I get turned away. I would go to my supervisor about this, but he is barely in the office and when he is - he’s always in meetings and never around.
The only thing that’s keeping me in this internship, is the 13 bucks an hour. That’s about it. I don’t plan on working in this industry after I’m done with school, especially since I have two years more to go (going to a four year school right after this semester). I have had already completed three other internships during my school year at community and don’t really need the experience, even though it does help.
I’m honestly scared to leave because I don’t want to burn bridges with the company or lose out on a reference in the future from my boss. I really do try to stick it out and come in, do my job and leave. But I’m honestly very uncomfortable being here and it’s effecting my mental state, to a point where I can’t focus in class at school. Do I just stick out this internship or should I call it quits professionally and focus on finishing school?
Thank you for any kind of advice. I really appreciate it!
