Possible incorrect job placement?

I recently started a contracting job after the military. The contract that I signed was for a position much closer to what I was doing while in the military but once I started working it had me in a much more involved position. I am now considered a senior engineer, although this doesn't have any particular focus. This isn't a senior engineer of software or industrial engineer, this is simply engineering. There are different sections within my work. There's R&D and software/hardware integration, amongst other specialized positions, however, I don't fit directly into these specialized fields and my knowledge is in more than one field. I know a little bit about integration and other related subjects, I'm also finishing my master's in cybersecurity.

I have been talked to numerous times about what I would do by supervisors. With my skills not falling directly into any of these specialties, is this something that I should be asked? Isn't the responsibility of leadership to place me where I can fit best? I understand that they would like me to go where I feel like I should be placed but either way for going to either of these sections it may be somewhat of a learning curve not unless I take an information assurance position which would take me completely out of the senior engineering position.

This is the first job I had out of the military and the third job of my entire life. Should I just move on since it seems like no one can make up their mind? I did enjoy the job I had in the military, and I was very proficient at it, although I would like to move on to cybersecurity.
