Laid off with zero warning. Where to go next.

I woke up Friday, rolled out of bed, threw on on PJ pants and hooded sweatshirt as I always do and jumped on the computer to start work. It was just like any Friday before it.

My boss called around 12p and says he had the worst week. He was in Atlanta installing sensors and also our entire is team being laid off and today is my last day.

To say I was blindsided is an understatement. Just three weeks ago we were talking about expanding, sending offers to new hires, and what our goals were for the coming year.

With my job, I leave behind a six figure salary, an extremely casual work environment with little oversight, and a chunk of my ego that told me this could never happen to me because I’m a straight baller.

I have options, but I have questions:

  • Is it bad to have a gap in employment? I work in tech if that changes your answer

  • What do I tell potential employers?

  • If I would like to intentionally take a longer period off before looking for a new position, will I be judged for it?

Before I get to my options as I see them, some background on plans my wife and I have made: we are currently living in the bay area, but planned to move back to family in the PNW in the next fews months. My wife has been interviewing for remote positions so we can make this happen. This threw a huge wrench in our immediate plans as my job was based in the PNW city we were moving to.

Options:

  • Go back to my old company for a pay cut and my tail between my legs. This company is also in the PNW city we would move to. Pay cut would be minor, but the reason I left the company in the first place would be ever present. I cant see myself working here again for several more years as it’s truly a dead end.

  • I had an offer from a large local consumer electronics company back in March I turned down, mostly because there was no chance of remote work so I would need to quit to move. I could ask if the offer was still available.

  • Compete with my wife for other remote opportunities. I likely wont win and it’s quite likely both will not be hired.

  • Find a different job in the PNW city. This would be fine except the market in this city for my line of work is shit outside of the company I was laid off from and the company I had left before.

I guess I’m asking for opinions on good logic to use in this situation. I feel flummoxed and insecure and just dumbfounded about my current position - I just want to feel like someone has been here before and it turned out ok.
