Help a veteran out: I just got the Salesforce Marketing Cloud Email Specialist cert, where do I go from here?

Hi: a little background about me: my mom had 3 boys. I’m the oldest. Dad was a deadbeat, and I joined the military at 17 to send money home.

At some point middle bother got really in to drugs. I can’t give mom any money that she doesn’t spend on him going from treatment to treatment and I pay for her (and I guess his rent and baby brother) as her job barely covers what she needs to keep her bills up.

Mom is a maid at hotels in LA. It’s not the best job but my little brother is going to start community college next year and we are all happy for him.

The reason I bring all this up is because when I got out and used my GI bill to go to school for computer programming the first job I landed was as an email migration specialist using sales force SFMC as a contractor. The contractor part is going to come back up.

I use ampscript and data extensions to migrate old email build from the legacy system to the SFMC email studio module. I also do AMPSCRIPT to create responsive design solutions, or create ad-hock one tone campaign content.

I thought I was a true and blue developer like the rest of my college class. At 42hr I make enough to send home and still pay my bills and live ok. I been working on a contract to hire basis for the last 2 years at the company I’m at.

Well, I was supposed to get hired in my mind after my initial 4 months, but they just keep extending me every 4 months. No guarantee. I asked my boss Friday after hitting my 21 month mark about how long until I find out if I get hired and he said I won’t. It wasn’t a bad thing, it was a heart to heart off the record conversation. He broke it down to me that I was a “Marketing Operations Technician 2” and that they hire other type of developers and that I just didn’t have the background that they were looking for.

He also told me that even if they did hire me my pay would go down to 20’s because it’s a job that most people get hired with without a degree and that they already have more than enough people in the company for now. It was a big shock: I’m happy that he stuck his neck out for me and we have a great work chemistry.

I thought that I was on a good path career wise, but after getting my Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Email Specialist (WI22) cert and with my bachelors in computer science that I would for sure be able to make more than 25-29hr if I was hired full time.

My boss tells me that I’m a contractor and that generally contractors get paid more. But I get no benefits at all. Next week for Christmas I’m working and New Years. My family means everything to me, they understand that I work a lot, and I love my mom because I’d never make it here without her. It I just don’t know why my bachelors in computer science and a certification from Salesforce would make so little, especially because I love what I do and I was hoping I was “set”

can anyone recommend what I can do? How do I keep working on sfmc email marketing but make the salary needed to make at least 100k tops. Any advice welcome and please talk to me like I’m 5 because I’m the only person who’s gone to college in my family and I’m open to doing whatever it takes.

Tl;dr: can I make around 100k with a Salesforce Certified Marketing Cloud Email Specialist (WI22) cert and a computer science bachelors? I love working sfmc and don’t know what the names of the roles I need to look for or the path I need to take. Thanks!
