I have a temporary job at Organisation A. It's not in my desired field, but it's been paying the bills while I apply for jobs in my desired field.
I have just been offered a job at Organisation B, which I'm grateful for. It's in my desired field, but doesn't pay very well, and it's a long commute from my home.
Now-- in perhaps bad timing-- Organisation C has just advertised a vacancy which will be interviewing in around a month's time. It's in my desired field, it's around the corner from my home, and I've always wanted to work there. It's also a lot better paid than the role at Organisation B. But Organisation B wants me RIGHT NOW, and they actually want me-- whereas there's no guarantee I'd get the role at Organisation C if I applied.
I'm at a loss for what to do. Do I:
- Stay in Organisation A, being thankful I have it as a placeholder, and say no to the firm offer at Organisation B in order to hold out for applying for Organisation C (and fingers crossed that I'll get it, but it's not certain...).
- Say yes to Organisation B knowing that I will quit after just around 2 months in the event that I apply for and get the role at Organisation C?
Normally I wouldn't even stop to think about this, as I recognise that I don't owe employers anything, that I'm just a number and totally replaceable to them, and that I need to do what's best for me. But a complicating hypothetical factor is that the field Organisations B & C are in is very small and specialised. Let's say I accept an offer from Organisation B and then, having started there, am offered and accept a job at Organisation C. That'd mean leaving Organisation B after a very brief time, which would cause administrative inconvenience and potentially some upset. I'd be worried that'd come back to bite me in some way seeing as I'd definitely come across some employees from Organisation B in the course of my work at Organisation C. In a sense they are sister organisations. I am anxious that a decision like jumping ship from B to C after having accepted an offer and starting at B might burn bridges and damage my professional reputation somehow.
