I had my first (and only) day of training this morning for a temporary receptionist job, and my only tasks are to answer and transfer calls (I do not have any knowledge re: the company, so will not be speaking with anyone at length), and sign for packages. That's it. I do not have access to the work computer, though I have a login to use if I need to check the voicemails in the morning; she said I probably would not need to do that. I did four hours today and answered three calls. The rest of the time I just chatted with the current receptionist.
I asked what she does when she has downtime, and she said she reads, scrolls through her phone, and does other small tasks for herself. She also said, "You could watch a movie—well, maybe not a movie, though I guess you could do that—as long as you're not bothering anyone."
Here's my question: can I bring my laptop and write/do a few tasks for myself? My desk is in the entry area, and some people walk through there throughout the day, but no one really stopped to linger, and the offices nearby have tinted windows and shut their doors. I don't plan on using social media extensively, watching anything, or playing music, but I don't want to get in trouble. I didn't think about it to ask the current receptionist before I left, but it's an eight-hour shift, and I really don't want to feel like I'm wasting my day. Any advice would be great!
