After a decade of being spread thin across numerous unrelated tasks that come up chaotically (i.e., being the resident jack of all trades in fast-paced environments) I want to withdraw to skills in my comfort zone and work at my own pace, while having time on the side to hone other skills.
Based on my work experience, the skills I’m happiest exercising are:
- Proofreading/editing/writing in English (technical writing more so than copywriting or creative writing)
- Building, then using/maintaining spreadsheet models and the mathematical reasoning applied therein
These are rather generic skills, but I seem to be good enough at them to repeatedly become the organization-wide go-to, especially for work that requires using both skillsets together. So I’m looking to be paid for just those, without an employer piling on whatever else they want/need at the moment. And I really, really want to escape the pattern of short-notice deadlines and having to watch my email/phone for "emergencies" throughout my days.
More context in case it helps: my primary domain expertise is in financial markets and statistics. I also have background in experimental psychology and technical theatre, and an array of general knowledge/experience that proves useful at random (dabbling in chess, philosophy of mind, neuroscience, visual art, filmmaking, basic physics, cooking, etc.). Due to my generalist background, I can usually grasp novel data/writing quickly. But I have done very little programming; that is something I want to have time to learn, not a skill that I can sell at this point.
