I recently started a new job working in an HR related field at an industrial company. I've previously worked in government and this is my first management gig.
Alarms started ringing when I joined the company. A few weeks in and I had basically been left alone to figure it all out. There appeared to be no vision and no plan and this was confirmed when my boss told me that they still didn't have a strategy for my work stream yet. This has caused me much anxiety and I figured I'd have to start making my own work.
I started throwing myself into tasks and volunteering for things, putting my name forward and the like. I'm a naturally enthusiastic person and this was the first time the company had hired a person in a role like mine.
Fast forward to today where I asked my new boss for feedback on my performance so far. She said that she had one "glaring concern", namely that I was too enthusiastic and needed to stop putting my name forward for things and volunteering to provide services which she said she had to remind me about several times.
She did go on to say that I have the skill and temperament to succeed, however this feedback has really thrown me and knocked the wind out of me a little. I already had concerns about the culture here and had been warned about my boss in the first week of working here (once by her colleague on the executive team!) Which was weird!
I'm not sure what to think and any advice would be appreciated
