Issues with applying in other departments within the organization?

I'm currently in a temp position (work in a post secondary institution) and my contract ends at the end of the year.

There's only one open position in the department I currently work in that I'm eligible for; already applied for it.

I've also been applying to permanent positions in other departments as insurance in case I don't get the one in my department, as I still need to pay bills and eat, after all...
