I am having trouble getting a decent-paying job in a certain field after graduating from college. And I fear that the longer I go without getting a job, the worse my chances get.
My resume currently includes my education (bachelor’s degree), a somewhat relevant job I worked at 3 years ago (for two years), and a fast job I worked at about 7 years ago (for about a year) when I was still in high school. I wish I didn’t have to include the fast food job, but I worry that a resume with only one job would look even worse. I included the fast food job to highlight my client service skills, but I have no clue whether these companies are interested in seeing this.
I did manage to get a more relevant job after graduating from college. However, I quit after two days. I definitely burned bridges there. But at this point I’m starting to wonder whether I should just delete the fast food off my resume and add the more recent job instead, even though I was only there for two days. On my resume I write “Month Year–Month Year” for all my jobs, so in this case it would be something like “April 2020–April 2020”. It wouldn’t say that I quit after only two days.
Would this be a bad idea? It might be considered misleading, but I don’t know if it’s lying. I guess I could technically write it in a way without actually lying, but would it be a good idea? I’ve never lied on a resume, nor do I want to, but I don’t know what I should do at this point.
I already know my work experience is a mess and I’m a terrible candidate, but still…I need help finding a job.
So I guess my questions are:
Should I delete the fast food job off my resume or leave it on?
Should I add the job I only worked at for two days and just say something like April 2020–April 2020? Or would these dates make me look even worse?
Does this put me at risk of getting fired down the road even if I’m exaggerating, not actually lying? I feel like it is their responsibility to probe me for more information. If they don’t, then all is good, right?
