Ive worked at my most recent job half a year, and halfway in I was promoted to lower management. Due to staffing issues, and being proficient with the systems they use, I was put on hard to cover shifts and given little direct training.
There was talk for awhile of an upper-managment position just under my boss needing to be filled soon before they go on family leave, and they recommended I and the others in my position apply for it when it becomes available at the time. Several months passed until now, and the others in my position had a bit more training, but were not in the same role much longer than myself.
The promotion opened up to apply a few days ago, but when I talked to my boss, they sounded pretty discouraging about it. They said they thought I'd do great in the role some day, but they had strong reservations anyone in my position could handle it right now given the experience. They gave very little feedback, but strongly suggested they wanted someone with more direct experience, ideally someone from a difference branch or location of our company who wanted a lateral move.
It's become quite clear my boss has now lowered their standards to outside applicants with some experience for the role. As a coworker explained to me, this would just result in us (the people in my position and myself) having to train our own boss, as our current one is going on family leave soon. Our boss also sent an email telling the ones in my position to apply in the next few days if we were interested.
Its a frustrating thing, my boss made it sound so decided, I didn't buy a suit or prepare much for an interview. I guess I was tricked into thinking there was a strong possibility of them hiring someone with direct experience, but I'd be very upset if someone got the role and then expected us to train them to be our boss. What do I do?
