I’ll try to stay brief.
I’m early career, at a small company (less than 20 employees).
This week is my one-year anniversary. Typically, the boss celebrates this with a card and small gift. I have seen him do this with every other employee. I got nothing, so he either forgot or doesn’t care.
I’ve also gathered that he initiates meetings with others to discuss their performance and offer them raises. A girl who was hired two months after I was has received TWO raises — one six months in, one today unexpectedly.
From some blessedly candid convos, I’ve learned that not only has the boss approached my colleagues about raises and reviews and not the other way around, but I’ve also discovered I’m officially the lowest paid salaried employee despite not being the newest, least experienced, or least educated.
Honestly, it stings. At this point I wonder if I’m even good at my job, despite the fact that I have never bungled a project and always meet or surpass targets. I have helped the business grow. All of my other coworkers like me, genuinely (they will chat with me/invite me to things outside of work).
I genuinely don’t understand why I’m not afforded the same courtesies or treatment as everyone else. And at this point, I NEED a raise due to considerably rising rent and COL in my city.
I’m just humiliated. No one else has had to ask for this. I feel like I’m invisible despite the fact that if I quit tomorrow, the company would have a very difficult time without me for at least the next several months.
How do I deal with this situation without sounding like I’m bitter and have a chip on my shoulder?
