How do I decline an interview for a promotion without ruining my career?

A few months ago I was promoted to management, and an even higher position opened up under my boss recently.

When I spoke to my boss about it, they were pretty discouraging. They told me it was a lot more responsibility for not much more pay, that you are much more under the microscope of the corporate team, and I shouldn't be surprised if someone with "more experience" gets the job because its "just business".

I took all of this to heart, even if this was exaggerated by my boss ane they plainly didn't want me in the role, I wouldn't want to work in that environment anyways. Well I dont think they've received many qualified outside candidates since, that or they are just trying to humor me, and suddenly started pushing me and the others at my level to apply.

As I didn't plan on them wanting to interview me, I didn't get a suit, and I didnt prepare at all. They messaged me today if I wanted to interview tomorrow. If a similar position opened down the line I'd be more excited to apply, but right now I'm visualizing me going in unprepared and stressed, and I dont want to make a fool of myself. Is there a way to respond to decline the interview, but set myself up so if something similar opened up later Im not ruled out?
