Has anyone applied to a different position within the same organization when they've already accepted another offer with them but haven't started yet?

Basically what the title says, just interested to see if anyone has been through something similar and if so, how it went down.

I accepted an offer from a company last week (the start date is Sept 20). Signed the letter, passed the background check, everything's good to go. I'll be honest and say, it's not exactly an ideal position personally, since it is entry-level and the salary isn't that appealing, however, it's in an industry I've had tons of experience in, and I figured it would be easy to move up once I start.

I remember my interview went well, to the point where the interviewer was stumped, and mentioned "this was the first time" she had ever "interviewed someone with this much experience"; at one point she even double-checked with me if I was interviewing for a manager position. The HR manager called me literally two hours later to offer me the job.

I wasn't even thinking about applying elsewhere until I got a LinkedIn notification for a different position within this company's same department. It is a 'lead' position where I'd essentially be managing people in my (soon to be) role. In terms of the job requirements/description/qualifications, it's almost word-for-word what I used to do at my previous job, so I know I can excel at it. Like, same exact duties and industry lol.

My question is: would it be appropriate to reach out to the recruiter to ask about interviewing for this lead role? I've seen some people say it leaves a negative impression on the company but I'm not sure... I don't want to do it if it'll somehow jeopardize my offer.

Has anyone had any experiences with similar situations? Any pros/cons? Appreciate the input!

*Edit* Part of me is wary also since I can't shake the feeling it's probably a position with an identified internal candidate and interviewing will just be a waste of time.
