I’m a recent college grad and it’s been tough finding a job. I started a position almost 2 weeks ago doing administrative work. I don’t hate it, but it’s boring to me & not giving me the experience I’m looking for; I feel as though I can be doing more with my degree (Biology). I took the job because I was in need of money, hoping something else that better fits my interests would come my way in the future. Well, I was recently offered a position in my field (Lab Tech) and they want me to start ASAP. Thus, I would need to give my current employer a one week notice. I feel really bad having to do this, I know common courtesy is usually 2 weeks - especially since I recently started. I’m also feeling really anxious to have this conversation with my supervisor. I should note that my current job is temporary through the end of the year, but technically I could lose it at any point in time prior to that. Any advice on how I should approach this? I feel so terrible having to do this to my current employer, however, I also know I have to do what’s best for myself.
