Hi all. So I've been applying to jobs at my local school district for a few months now and about two weeks ago I got a call that they wanted to hire me as a playground aide. I accepted and put in all my paperwork and started work last Tuesday. I currently only work 3.25 hours a day, but I can already feel my health deteriorating. Between being out in the heat (we live in the desert and it's been 90+ degrees F and dress code requires full-length pants and short sleeve shirts) and listening to the kids scream for 3 hours straight, I come home every day feeling physically ill (severe migraines, clammy, shaking, nauseous, etc.) and this feeling continues long into the evening. In addition to feeling sick every day, the job has turned out to be quite different than what was presented to me during the application/interview/and hiring process. The majority of the kids have severe untreated behavior issues and there are multiple kids getting suspended every week (sometimes for cussing, often for making death threats or severely injuring another child). As someone just out of college and with no professional background working with kids (not to mention that some of the students are taller than me and could quite literally kill me if I had to break up a fight), I don't feel safe or capable in this position. On top of all that, I was provided no training and was told to "figure it out" by staff members, who have repeatedly been rude to me for asking questions. The school is still relatively new but does have over 900 students (which they plan to bump up to over 1200 in the coming school year which they completely lack the time or resources for). Additionally, they seem to have poor retention rates of employees and many staff members have quit in the middle of the year due to ongoing problems with the students, a detail which only came out after I was hired.
I feel reasonable to send my resignation for all the above reasons (and to look for work in a different field in the future) but the few family members that I've talked to about this situation have told me that I'm "just being crazy" and making myself sick because I don't want a job.
Is quitting justified at this point or am I really just being whiny?
