Took a job and now I feel like I'm stuck with it.

I am a non-citizen with a PhD, so I had to take the first relatively good offer so I can keep my visa status. That was almost a year ago. Job doesn't pay very well, though it does give a lot of good exposure to other companies. They just told me I am doing a great job and gave me a raise but at this pace, in 10 years, I will be making the same amount of money that a postdoc makes on average. I would like to start to look for better paying jobs but how do you apply for positions without getting asked for letters of recommendation from my current job. I do not have the option of leaving and working as consultant or contractor because my legal status in the country depends on having a full-time job.
