I took a traveling auditing job at the beginning of 2019 with the offer stating one week of travel per month to the other side of the state. I accepted this offer of about 53k/year for reference.
Quickly this turned into 50% of my time at home and 50% of my time on the other side of the state with MAYBE a week of travel to another state once per quarter.
COVID hit and many of our clients went "on hold" until things get back to normal (we work with food distributors/restaurants/grocery stores/etc) or closer to. Specifically, in my neck of the woods, a fair number of them are currently on hold.
What made matters worse was my managers decision to post another job in the city across the state where I had been spending 50% of my time, hiring an additional auditor in the area I had originally been hired to work, because I went on maternity leave in May of last year. So my "at home" work was cut in half by the addition of that position, and then basically decimated by COVID shut downs.
Now, they have me traveling essentially every week of the month except for a cumulative week per quarter. However, I have seen no salary increase to compensate for the increased travel. I feel that this is unfair, and I'm being taken advantage of because I haven't said anything about it yet. I'm also a mid 20s woman working in a field dominated by middle aged men, so there's that. There's a ton of work that needs to be done, just in different parts of the country. They are objectively saving money on hiring someone living in a state with a hire cost of living (California, for example) by paying me a Midwest decent wage but sending me there for a week at a time.
They do pay for gas/hotels/food/travel costs. However, I feel like going from you'll travel 25% of the time and now actually traveling about 95% of the time would typically earn a bit of a compensation boost. Am I crazy?
Has anyone dealt with this issue? What are some strategies you would use to approach management about this? What sort of pay differential would I even aim for, reasonably, if I were to touch on this issue? Thanks for any advice you guys have in advance.
TL;DR - I was hired to travel 25% of the time and am now traveling approximately 95% of the time with no pay/benefits increase. What do I do?
