What kind of laptop should I get?

I'm a stay-at-home mom returning to work. I haven't worked formally for 10 years and will likely be here a lot to ask questions and seek advice. I have little confidence and I don't really know where to start but I figured I would need a laptop. I'm hoping to get a home-based job but I'm going to keep my options open. By "keeping my options open" I mean I have no idea what types of jobs to apply for. I've seen job postings that say the applicant must have a laptop or desktop but it's been ten years since I bought one and I really have no idea what I should get and what software/apps I should be familiar with. Any suggestions?
