I have this coworker that is really shady. We just upgraded our work systems to a different program (I work in healthcare for a hospital). Everyone's kind of getting used to the flow of the program and, for me, I was using sticky notes to jot down some general notes about patient (no identifying info, just quick notes).
Anyways, this coworker, who's a self proclaimed "shift lead", proceeded to collect a mountain of stick notes from the shred box we have and turn them into our boss. I also a college student, so when we have down time, which is about 40% of my day, I catch up on homework and read. Apparently, all of these things are "highly inappropriate." She never even hinted that these things were bothering her and she even went as far as to act super nice towards me. The best part? I got this chewing from my boss after asking him if I could change to another sub-department within the hospital. Kissed my chances of getting rid of that toxic environment goodbye.
This coworker has been caught, on several occasions, violating HIPAA (a Healthcare law that protects patient privacy). I.e. calling on the work phone to let her husband know so-and-so is here, getting in patient charts she shouldn't be in, going through my paperwork to find her friends information from the days prior. She even got on my chart and snooped around when I was in the ER (I was told by another coworker who caught her red-handed).
I don't know why I'm so upset about this? I'm unprofessional for using sticky notes and reading, but she can literally break federal laws and it's OK? I feel so betrayed by her because I've never done anything to her. I always take her shifts when she calls in, check in on her when she's ill, and just generally friendly to her.
What should I do? My boss clearly shows favoritism for her and she refers to herself as "his little spy." I'm not sure outing her to my boss would do anything. She's already been "under investigation" for violating HIPAA, and got away with it (obviously, it didn't deter her). Do I just call compliance and get her in trouble?
