TL;DR: I've been working for 6 months open-contract, decide to give one week notice right when projects start pouring in (unintended). Boss doesn't want to accept me quitting and is blaming me for his increased hours at the office.
Ok, so context: I've been working as a draftsman for 6 months now, and I'm about to return to school. I work for an independent architect in a small office. I draft on his very old PC running pirated AutoCAD. I've had to do a bunch of this guy's personal errands, clean and maintain the office, play IT guy, and deal with his personality (narcissist, racist/sexist, unprofessional attitude). All while being underpaid.
But anyways, I got sick last weekend after measuring a very old house. I wasn't sure if it was COVID, so I stayed home. Come Monday, I am working from home while feeling ill. He would email, text, and call me excessively to oversee the project. This is not normal behavior even when we're at the office.
Now on Tuesday, I'm doing a different project and I happened to not format a list of comments for him properly. Instead of communicating with me what he wants, he simply decides to text and email me messages like "I have to work 9 hours because you're not here" and "JESUS HELP ME JESUS, why is this so difficult". I call him to apologize for my mistake and that I was worried, and he's super chill and like "it's no big deal". His bipolar attitude was my breaking point.
This morning (Wed) I sent him a very cordial one-week notice. He emails me back simply saying "Sorry to hear this. Don't work until you can come back to the office." I feel like he just ignored my entire email. And later today, he kept blaming me for his increased hours at the office and not getting tested sooner. Well, I waited a little bit to avoid a false negative, and then got tested as soon as I could today. But whatever. Oh, and he wants me to go in while sick.
So now, here we are. If I didn't have my belongings in the office, I would have quit entirely with no notice. But it seems like I've been entirely too nice to this guy. He has praised me multiple times before for being a good employee and has even paid me bonuses, but I'm afraid my time has come with him. I wanted to work with him remotely while in school, but he's such a jerk that it isn't worth what he's paying me anymore. Never been sick once and now he's freaking out, unbelievable.
I honestly want to go in tomorrow and grab my things and leave already. I don't have a good reason not to. I appreciate any advice.
