How To Discuss Middling Performance From People Who Report To Me Day to Day?

Background, I have a few years experience and I am responsible for lightly supervising our entry level employee. She is a decent worker, but often turns things in just a little late, or will mess up certain tasks. We both report in to a director, and I mainly try to shield the entry level employee when they are making mistakes.

There was a light incident where she messed up, so now it's come to a head. What is the proper way to talk about this when I'm talking to our director? I guess, mainly, I'm wondering how honest I should be.

FWIW, I know she (the entry level) will not be fired, nor should she be.
