My best friend and I used to work together years ago. In fact, that job was how we met and became friends. She was a technician and I was a mid-level manager. She worked under my supervision from time to time, but I was not her direct supervisor (her direct supervisor was a high-level manager). Anyway, she got fired from that job because she found out her direct supervisor slept with her then boyfriend now ex behind her back and confronted her about it. Yup, you heard that right. I resigned from the position shortly after because I got a better job offer elsewhere.
It's been a few years since all that happened, and we are now best friends. She recently asked me to write her a letter of recommendation and pretend to be her direct supervisor (since her direct supervisor obviously won't be writing her a good letter of recommendation). I'm strongly considering doing this since in all honesty, she was a very hard worker and she deserves this new job. She got fired for something BS.
I know a fake letter of recommendation is most of the time a bad idea, but in this case, I'm not a fake person. I'm a real person who really used to work for that company. I was a real manager... just not her direct supervisor. The company she's applying to specifically ask for a professional letter of commendation from her former direct supervisor. Should I just fake it? How would they ever find out?
