I recently (a little over a month ago) started a new job in a field/position I’m very experienced in. I have already surpassed some of my coworkers in the same position and made several suggestions to management regarding better approaches to certain tasks.
I personally feel like my skill/work ethic surpasses those who I’m currently equal with and I’ve already noticed many shortcuts/inappropriate actions they’ve taken. This particular job is like the final stepping stone into my career, and I need 2 solid references out of it to apply to grad school. At this point I feel I get on well with my superiors but I’m really struggling with people who I have an equivalent job title to. I want to make myself stand out, be assertive, show critical thinking, etc etc to get those references but I also don’t want to constantly be throwing my immediate coworkers under the bus, since that’s actually one of the reasons I left my previous job.
How can I make myself look fantastic without pissing everyone off and becoming the person everyone hates?
In some areas of the job, and with certain coworkers, I actually disagree with their methods so strongly I considered looking for a different job, but I do seem to be getting on well with the people I need the references from. If all goes as planned, I only need this job for about 18 months and I’ll be off to grad school, but I don’t want to be utterly miserable for the next 18 months, and I don’t want it to turn into 30 months because I didn’t show enough skill to get those references.
Is there any way at all I can move forwards/upwards without coming off as entitled/perfectionist/complaining/etc?
