Anyone have strong, well-informed opnion on government jobs, specifically the GS payscale jobs?

I was recently offered an opportunity by my army reserves unit for an admin job that would be at the GS-9 step 1 paygrade. I don't know much about the civilian jobs within the government/military and would love to hear any experience or opinions in a job similar to this. It's not the type of job I ever envisioned myself pursuing, but the pay is way better than I expected and I'm not sure if it'd be stupid to reject an offer like this. I would be hired through the VRA process, which means it would be 0 competition (which I hear is rare for fed jobs).
