Recent job search has made me feel like I'm not qualified for anything except the field I'm trying to leave. (Rant - encouragement or advice welcomed)
Hello! Some background: I just graduated in May with my bachelor's in sociology. I want to get my master's in mental health counseling at some point in the near future, but for now I'm taking a break from school.
I currently work part-time as a counselor at a day program for adults with special needs. Moving up in my company requires degrees/licensure in therapeutic recreation, which I do not have. I've been at this job for 3 years, with 5 years experience total with the special needs community. I love what I do, but this field doesn't pay a whole lot in my general area. I would like to move out on my own soon, but I need to be making more money first. So, I have begun my search for a full-time job that pays a little more.
At my previous job, I was a ride operator at a local amusement park for 4 seasons. I was a rides department lead for 2 of those seasons.
I feel like I'm just not qualified for anything except the field I'm currently in. I've been looking into medical receptionist jobs, office assistant jobs, jobs in the human services field, and advising/student services positions at local schools and colleges. I'm not looking for anything too extreme, just something to help me get on my feet. However, I feel like my skillset and experiences are too niche or just don't fit in with what I'm looking for.
My counselor job has provided me with customer service skills, caregiving skills (feeding/changing/medication distribution, etc), advocacy skills, and activity/event planning skills.
When it comes to my rides department lead job, I consider that some management/leadership experience. I performed daily safety inspections/filled out safety paperwork for the rides, organized my team's break and rotation schedule, attended daily management meetings, trained new team members, etc. But there's a little voice in my head that keeps telling me the job wasn't "official" enough to be considered management experience.
I feel like the only thing I'm qualified for is the field I'm currently in. For instance, office jobs often require office experience and human services jobs often require licensure as a social worker or counselor. Sociology as a major doesn't lead to a lot of solid career opportunities. I'm more than willing to learn/be trained in other areas. I would love to branch out. I just feel stuck. I'm having a hard time relating my past experience to other positions.
6 applications so far. 2 rejections. Haven't heard anything else. I guess I'm just in need of a little encouragement or advice if anyone has it. Thank you!
