Is there any way to get off the reference treadmill?

Let me explain what I mean by "reference treadmill." The constant feeling that you just never have enough fresh references to embark on a new job search... that you have to stay at your current job long enough to (maybe) get a good reference for a future one... where you'll be hanging around until you can stay long enough to maybe get a new reference.

I'm in a fix... I cashed in ALL of my best references to get my current job, which is turning out to be a disaster now that I'm a few months in. I won't be able to stay here as long as I planned and also hang on to my mental health. But I can't just go after those references again when I look for a new job... they'll wonder if I'm worth recommending if I didn't last so long on this supposedly "great" job. Also some of them were my supervisors years ago and frankly they are getting stale, or I'm losing contact with them... I mean, I just worked for them (and did a good job too)... I wasn't besties with them. They were bosses, I was employee. I'm not going to be constantly able to keep in touch with them and know where they've gone off to, and keep asking for references.

So now I feel I have no references left to give when I look for a new job. I need new ones and don't know where to get them. I'm not a job-hopper; I worked one place for 25 years in various departments, then took another job for 4 years, and I had hoped to stay in my current position for at least 4 years if not longer before transitioning to part time work. But this job is just growing more and more untenable for me and I will never last for that long.

How do I get off this treadmill?
