The title says it all. I landed the best job I have ever had and this, at the tail end of my working career. I have worked now for a full month and I feel that I can speak without fear of jinking the situation or without a full assessment of the actual job.
I have worked many jobs in fields such as project management, marketing, design and sales and in this roll I am the most comfortable, the most involved and feel the most needed. I was always told that I was the "creative person" It turns out I am not. I am a nitpicking order freak and this job requires a person who is just like that.
I am essentially in charge of receiving orders and matching those orders to over the counter sales or to work orders in the shop. This is for heavy equipment repair and rental. I am also in charge of the parts room and right now it is showing the signs of the last 10 years of neglect and a lack of caring. We have items we show in stock with no bin codes. We have items on the shelf that are marked "return" or "warranty" from jobs long since past. It is a mess. But the good news, for me, is that it is a giant puzzle and I get to spend my days making it better. It is a good feeling to start the clean up process. I can pretty much do whatever in between times that I am receiving and I am getting faster at that.
There are some down sides to this. There is a lot of walking involved and right now the shop is rather hot. It will be fine this winter or even when it cools down into the 90s. I have to watch the wear and tear on my feet and knees and remember to drink plenty of water. On the plus side, I fit right into the culture, I was a mechanic back in my college days and can talk the talk. I also get to work around big noisy machines and I get to drive fork lifts.
The job site is 8 minutes from my house. It's going really well and I hope I can do this until retirement.
