I want to preface this by saying that I have very minimal work experience and I have never really worked to this point, because I simply didn’t need to. To add to this, due to social anxiety, I just never consciously perused employment. University was an excuse that kept me occupied.
I don’t feel that I am useless or a failure for having limited work experience, but employers seem to.
Now as I’m older and I see the importance of employment, I am actively seeking work. Having graduated almost a year ago I cannot get a single job. I have applied to (and continue to apply to) all sorts of jobs, from low level to professional/degree related jobs. Every single application I put in, in the last month has been ignored, even basic temporary jobs that only have a few hours of work a week.
Nothing that I do seems to work. I applied to agencies last week, I have heard nothing from them, I have also applied to a volunteering agency that I know gives out work often and I have heard nothing from them either!!
I really don’t have a clue what I am doing wrong. I have tried to create a retail CV without my degree and sent that off, that yields nothing.
At this point I just feel like a complete reject and failure. It is extremely concerning to me that no employer “sees” anything in me and that I can’t get a basic temporary position. Am I really that dire and awful that I can’t even get a basic 6 hours a week position? Really? 😖
I am absolutely terrified that I have got myself stuck in a rut and I will not get out of this.
I want to do something to change this but I don’t know what I can do. I can’t force employers to hire me.
I have a university careers advisor who just keeps telling me to “keep applying” and offers suggestions of volunteering. But I am of the opinion that I need to do something pretty drastic at this time.
I don’t think it will change if I continue to sit and apply for jobs everyday. Employers will just continue to gaslight me and blow me off when I ask for feedback.
