Hi! I basically never post on reddit and mainly lurk so apologies in advance if this post is super awkward! Also, heads up as this may get lengthy.
I’ve been in a job searching slump for a couple of months now, I’m a seasoned customer service professional looking to transition into a more officey industry, mainly looking at receptionist and assistant positions. Today, I received a text that basically said “We’ve received your application for the front office receptionist position, please email x@y.com to complete your application.” I didn’t feel too weird about this, except that I wasn’t sure exactly which job this was in regards to as I’ve applied to tons of front office receptionist jobs in the last month or so. No worries, I thought, I’ll just email them and surely when they respond I’ll have a better idea of what this is in regards to.
The first thing that was weird to me was they didn’t request any specific information from me such as a copy of resume or anything of the like, so I just emailed the provided email and told them I received their message was just emailing to complete my application and follow up about the front office receptionist position.
They emailed me back relatively quickly, within about an hour, and said that they had many applicants so they had already filled the receptionist position. However, there was another opportunity they would like to offer which is a personal assistant position. The job offerer in question briefly explained that she’s an “entrepreneur, philanthropist and human capital investor.” She is in need of a personal assistant to help out with emailing and calling clients and mailing some packages, etc. The job has a base pay of $500/week, part time and you can choose your own days because she’s flexible.
Here’s where I have some questions. First of all, it sounds too good to be true. And in my experience if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. The email didn’t have particularly bad grammar or broken english as is common with many scam emails, but there were random words capitalized in the middle of sentences which seemed a little odd. The email was just the persons name and a number @hotmail.com. I would typically think a professional of her caliber would have a company email for correspondence or something. She had no professional signature, in fact she did not sign off her email at all besides “Thanks.” I’m still not sure where the position is exactly, and for what I originally applied to.
A major question mark for me is that she stated that she’s currently out of town on business in the Carribean and Europe? Extremely vague, and very suspicious as I’m pretty sure covid restrictions have prevented Americans from traveling in these areas.
Overall, there are several red flags, and as I’m writing this out I’m realizing more and more how weird it is and how it does not sound legitimate at all.
My question is, what do they want from me if it is all fake? At the end of the email they asked me to send my name, phone number, home address, what my current job is and when can I start. I feel like this isn’t super pertinent information so on a whim I sent it over in the off chance this is legitimate and a good opportunity. Now I’m starting to have some anxiety about what they could actually do with this info?
TLDR; got a very strange and suspicious job offer for a “personal assistant”, I’m not sure how they got a hold of me specifically, and I’m worried about the information they have about me.
