Hello all. I just wanted to share my story and honestly I’m really surprised / excited to start.
It’s an administrative assistant job at a law firm that had over 50 people apply.
I’m 19. I only have around 3 years of job experience. And honestly - nowhere near the job experience that this job is. Sales mostly.
The interview started and they went very briefly over the job and Said “do you have any questions for us?” I could tell they were concerned about my age. “Oh...we see you just graduated high school.” I’m usually an excellent interviewee, but in this case, i just felt I wasn’t given a fair shot. I knew they had buses against my age - and honestly- it’s a fair bias to have.
I asked “what quality do you see in someone who would be successful in this environment?” They said “someone looking to grow as an employee with that mindset.”
To which I responded in pointing out every piece of my resume showing the willingness to grow. Showing my skills that show growth mindset.
After, they pointed the perks of the job out, told me the starting pay, etc. I thought this was a good sign. They also asked for references.
I left this interview feeling embarrassed, ashamed, etc. for even applying for a job I was grossly under qualified for - especially when they told me over 50 people applied. I felt like I wasted their time. This was on Thursday.
Today, I received a phone call from one of the attorneys letting me know they’d like to extend an offer - which I accepted!!
I’m sorry if this looks like I’m bragging but I had just signed an apartment lease and was laid off two days later. I really needed this position. I’m really proud of myself for turning the interview around.
I just wanted to say to everyone - take control of the interview. I overcame several objections by passionately stating my history and wants for the job.
You can do it, too. Odds may be against you like me - but you can do it!!!
