I’m an unpaid intern. I was given feedback (by a previous intern) that I need to take more initiative despite drowning in my already-heavy workload. Some of the other interns at this company say they do nothing all day, meanwhile I’m constantly loaded up on work.
To show them that I do take initiative, I kicked my ass into overdrive and started a bunch of new projects they wanted to see from me. The thing with this internship is that there’s never really any clear expectations. I have weekly tasks, but they want me to be pitching ideas, starting my own projects, doing stuff without asking questions. That feedback made me panic so much, I work all night and even on weekends catching up on my stuff so I can take on more.
I read somewhere that it looks bad on an intern to do extra work, but that’s the opposite. I’m working my ass off...
I honestly can’t tell if I’m expected to fit in all this work within my regular 9-5 hours, or if I really am going above and beyond. Not sure if I’m lacking and not hitting my marks because other than that previous intern’s feedback, I haven’t heard from my bosses. I also heard that if your boss doesn’t give you any feedback, they don’t like you.
My manager got promoted right before I started my internship, and my new manager does everything differently. She makes me nervous because she’ll just disappear for the whole day and seems annoyed when I ask questions. I’ve made some small mistakes here and there and she just seems mad, probably because it’ll come back to her (like I said, she’s new and has her own reputation to build).
It FEELS like I’m going above and beyond, and yet my managers always just want more, more, more and never even say “hey good job on that.” So I have no clue where I stand.
