Hey all, I've been a candidate for a job for about a month now. It's a part time position, but something related to what I'll be going back to school for this fall. It is only on the weekends, but pays more than y current job - enough that I would make almost the same amount anyway. I also believe I would enjoy t much more than my current job. I have done a phone interview and a Zoom interview withe the manager, who seems great. It all seems great. Except one thing...
During the last interview I asked for clarification on their on-call schedule. I thought I would be working long shifts Evey Saturday and Sunday, but in reality they plan to eventually have enough employees to have some people on call each day. And it's not our normal type of "on-call" where you sit at home. You still need to go to the office at the normal time. If somebody doesn't show up you get to work a full day. Otherwise you will get paid for at least 3 hours and then go home unless there is other office work to be done. So some weekends I would only be scheduled for one day but still have to get up early and go in on the other day, but most likely leave after a few hours. It's just not going to be as many hours as I originally expected.
It hasn't been an easy decision, but as much as I'm interested in the role itself, the schedule just isn't what I originally expected. I received and email on Friday saying their opening date had been pushed back again, but requesting references. I wrote a draft of my rejection and would love to get some feedback on it. The one person at home who I was able to ask about it said they would've written the positive points first and explained that I don't think it would work out because I got accepted into college for the fall semester... But I had already mentioned college so that doesn't really work as an excuse anyway.
Here's what I wrote:
Hi X,
I am going to have to respectfully back out of the hiring process. The role itself truly interests me and I believe I would enjoy it, but after much deliberation I have to be perfectly honest and say that I don't think the on-call schedule will work for me, as I feel I would not end up working as many hours as I would like. It was wonderful meeting you and getting to learn more about VIP Pet Care, and I appreciate all the consideration you have given me.
Respectfully,
Y
If anyone has any suggestions on how to improve it, I'd love to know. Maybe I'm making a big deal out of it, but the manager is so nice and I was truly interested. I don't want to ruin my chances of ever being able to work there in the future.
