When interviewing for a job while currently working, how do I answer the question “Why do you want to leave?”

I am currently working but seeking other employment. I had a phone interview a week or so ago and the interviewer asked me why I wanted to leave. I figured keeping it simple was best, so I said I was unhappy with the position. They asked me to elaborate. I stated that I was told certain things about the job, and promised certain things upon being hired that I’ve now learned are inaccurate and not going to be followed through with. Again, they wanted me to elaborate. So I began describing what I was told in my interview, how the position isn’t what was initially described, how I was hired under slightly false pretense, the direction the department has gone in the last six months and the issues surrounding it and why I no longer feel like the job is best suited for me. I tried to keep it as professional as possible. We finished the interview, all in all almost an hour long interview, and they told me they would be in touch. If I don’t hear from them by the 6th, to call them.

So I called them on the 7th. They returned my call today to inform me that they’ve decided to hire somebody else for the position. I inquired as to why and what they didn’t like about the interview. They told me that the interviewer “didn’t like how you talked so badly about your current position”.

So how do I answer a question I continue to get? Some places are fine with “I’m unhappy with the position” but other want a, sometimes lengthy, explanation. If the explanation is the issue, why ask? How do I go about handling this question?
