Backstory: I have been working a temp position for ~1 month. Was offered the permanent position, all I had to do was officially apply. Boss contacted HR to ask what the salary range is. They tell my boss, and my boss tells me: the compensation for this position is $80-100k. I applied ~2 weeks ago. Compensation got back to my boss at a salary lower than $80k. My boss immediately forwarded the initial email to HR where they said $80-100k salary range and asks them to re-evaluate.
HR re-evaluates compensation. They got back to my boss today at $80k and said they really had to stretch to get to this number, there is no room. I should mention: as a temp I have no benefits; permanent employment will include comprehensive benefits. I came into the position with about 8 years of experience, some prior positions being responsible for much more than my current position description. My boss is also shocked that I am at the low end of the original salary range.
My boss & my boss’ boss are both standing their ground and have gone back to HR and asked them to re-evaluate again. I told my boss I would need some time to think about all of this, as well as information about the compensation packages.
I am disappointed with the offer, but feel like my boss is truly trying their hardest to offer a fair package, so anything I say/do, I want to be as tactful and emotionless as possible. My boss is acting as the go-between for me & the HR people, so I can’t interface with them directly.
Long story for a simple question: what are my next steps? Is there anything I should do/say that would help sway these amorphous HR people into a higher compensation? Is there any way I can ask HR for the reasoning/formula behind their compensation evaluation?
