Stay at current job or move on?

Hi all, EE about 5 years into my career. I’ve been at my first company about 5 years now, I started out about 10% lower than industry and every year I’ve gotten a fairly significant raise, roughly 12% the first year and 8% last year.

In the 5 years I’ve been here I’ve been tasked with a ton of different changes, and have basically re written all of the code for one of our machine platforms. At this point, about 75% of the machinery that gets built, flows through me. I approve revisions, releases, even drive mechanical changes to equipment from the controls side of things. All and all, I’d say I run a tight ship and my machines are consistent and only improving. My job is a semi cake job and has enough stimulation that I rarely feel bored or underutilized as an EE.

However, I’m still paid about 8-10% below industry average. The area I am living in has a COL that is beginning to outpace my wages, and I fear I’ll be unable to purchase a home in the next few years, simply due to the fact that housing prices have doubled in the last few years, while my wage has not doubled.

I recently began the job search, and found a year-contracted position at another company that pays approximately 50% more than my current position (90K vs 60K + benefits). However, this position would put me back at a low point on the totem pole, and the contract is only for one year through a temp agency, and then it’s at the discretion of the contractor to bring me in as a W2 employee at their company.

I’m at a cross roads. If I stay, I’m pretty sure it’ll be a few years before I make the amount as I would if I had left. However, there’s no guarantee past a year that I will keep the position.
