What kinds of jobs are you supposed to want?

When I talk about jobs I want or like and people talk as if I supposed to work at that position temporarily untill I "upgrade" or make more money, the national household income is 50ish k so I worked with that to settle at 40k(Not too low or high in comparison). I dont want to stand out by making too much. People will say to do what you want but when I say my plans people comment that my aim is low, so whats the right answer?

Content of job is irrelevant to me, this is purely about income.
